Pumpkin Carvings
Ever since I started the
DH Pumpkin Contest, I've been carving my own pumpkin every year.
I use a little pumpkin saw/tool kit from the grocery store, as well as a few wood-carving tools for scraping and details. I draw my patterns on the computer, and then print 'em. It usually takes me several hours to carve it.

2017 Yip! Yip!
Avatar: The Last Airbender
( fullsize)
Featuring Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Appa from near the end of episode two of the tv show, after they bury Zuko's ship in snow. I thought a carving of them waving goodbye would be fitting for the final DH Avatar Pumpkin Carving Competition.
Took about 2 hours.

2016 The Last Airbenders
Avatar: The Last Airbender
( fullsize)
Featuring Aang, Appa, and Momo, from a 2012 sketch drawn by ATLA co-creator Bryan Konietzko. I've been wanting to do a carving of this drawing since I first saw it, but never got around to it.
Took about 6 hours.

2015 Huntin' Metroids
Metroid Prime
( fullsize)
Featuring Samus and two metroids, design based on a decal I got off eBay a couple years ago. I'm glad I finally did a Metroid carving, but I wish I had more time to make it look brighter.
Took about 4 hours.

2014 10 Years of Avatar
Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra
( fullsize)
Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of ATLA and the DH pumpkin carving contest, with Aang and Korra. Both designs come from their respective Art of the Animated Series covers.
Took about 9 hours.

2012 Master Assassins
The Avengers
( fullsize)
Featuring Hawkeye and Black Widow, my favorite non-super-powered characters from the movie. Hawkeye's pose is from a promotional poster and Black Widow's is from the Empire magazine cover. I tried a new method of tracing the pattern with a Sharpie instead of transfering it via pin-pricking, and I love it! So much faster.
Took about 8 hours.

2011 Naga and Korra
Avatar: Legend of Korra
( fullsize)
Had to make this carving when I saw the design on a SDCC poster. I'm really happy that Naga's fur turned out so fluffy looking, though Korra could have gone better. Took about 7 hours total.

I had been wanting to make a Trigun carving, and since I finished the Korra one early, I made this on the back of the pumpkin. ^^ The Vash drawing is from episode 19, and took 5 hours total.

2010 Star Wars R2D2
Star Wars
( fullsize)
Inspired after watching the old Star Wars movies, IV through VI. Made on a softball-sized pumpkin and was going to carve another, but the detailing on this one crushed my carving spirit. Took maybe 12 hours, over two days? Cute, but not worth the eyestrain. =_=

2009 Rock Breaker Toph
Avatar: The Last Airbender
( fullsize)
Wanted to make another Avatar carving, but really didn't want it to be Aang again. ^^; Toph's pose is from the tv show, episode 2x06 "The Blind Bandit." It took about 9 hours to finish.

2008 Naruto Rasenshuriken
Naruto Shippuden
( fullsize)
Got tired of making Avatar pumpkins, so I went with a Naruto design. I love how dynamic Naruto's face (which was on the back of the pumpkin) came out. A lot of the trick-or-treater parents thought the full-body Narutos were breakdancers. xD The Naruto poses are from the Naruto Shippuden manga, chapter 399. It took about 2 days to finish.

2007 Super!Chibi Aang
Avatar: The Last Airbender
( fullsize)
Went for a more simpler design, but was actually more time consuming because of all the shading/scraping. Aang's pose is from the animation short, "School Time Shipping." I think it took two days to finish.

2006 Airball Aang
Avatar: The Last Airbender
( fullsize)
I wanted to try a more complicated carving, and this time had a real carving kit & read carving guides. I love how the airball and smoke look. Aang's pose is from official Nickelodeon art. I think it took two days to finish.

2005 Aang & Logo
Avatar: The Last Airbender
( fullsize)
My first solo carving. I didn't have good tools so it was really challenging for me to cut out the letters and not cut out Aang's face. I think it took 1-2 days to finish. I don't really like it. ^^;;
